Three cases have been started against the activists of BNP over attacks on police personnel near the High Court area in the city centring the party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s court appearance.
Detectives, however, detained BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy in the city on Tuesday night in this connection.
Police filed two cases under the Special Powers Act—one at Ramna Police Station and the other at Shahbagh Police Station—on Tuesday night.
The third case was started with Shahbagh police over attacks on police personnel. 700/800 people, including BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and the party standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, were made accused in the two cases filed with Shahbagh Police Station.
Ramna Police Station OC Mainul Islam and Shahbagh Police Station duty officer and Sub-Inspector Akram Hossain confirmed the matter to Samakal.
Hundreds of BNP men swooped on police yesterday and snatched away some of their fellows who were detained. They also beat several police members and vandalised their vehicle and firearms.
The incident happened around 3:00pm when the motorcade of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia was crossing the area on way to her Gulshan home from a makeshift court in Bakshibazar.
